About Us
Miss Jenny's Soap
is a small cottage industry  ran by the Jenny
Stevens and family.
TJ, Jenny, Andrew, Jon Tom, Briar,
and Moses make and test all
Miss Jenny's soap.

A bit of history....

TJ and Jenny attended Berea College in 1995.
While there, Jenny could not use commercially
manufactures soap, due to flaky, dry itchy skin.
TJ and Jenny have always loved old fashion
homemade goodies of any kind. Homemade
soap seemed like something they would like to
make and use.

When Jenny was in elementary school, she had
a fourth grade teacher who  planned her class
theme around pioneer life. That year they made
fresh butter, strawberry jam, hand-dipped
candles, sewed an old fashion outfit, and even
made soap from lard and lye. This teacher made
a  lasting impression and it was Jenny's favorite
year of school.

TJ suggested that Jenny try to make some soap
to see if it might help her skin. He purchased a
book that Berea College had in their
Appalachian collection, "Making Soap and
Enjoying It" by Ann Bramson.

The first three batches were a complete failure,
due to the wrong ingredients and equipment.
The good Lord had pity and the fourth was a
success. Jenny tried the soap after it cured and
her skin did not flake or itch as badly.  She did
more research and made many new and
improved recipes until she came up the base
they now use. No more flakiness or dry itchy
skin, unless using commercial soap of course.

Since 1996, our family has been using Miss
Jenny's soap, shampoo, and laundry soap. We
began to give away soap to all our friends and
family. Jenny  began giving so much away that
TJ said she need to pay for her soap habit.  So
in 1999, we began thinking of ways to sell our
soap.  Craft shows and historical events seemed
to be a good places to start. Our first show was
Mother's day weekend at the Foxfire center in
Dillard, GA. We demonstrated old time soap
making and sold 40 bars of lye soap. We were
amazed. No show has ever equalled our  first
taste of soapy success.

We began traveling for the next few years doing
art and craft shows all over the southeast. We
worked for Stone Mountain Park, Cracker
Country, Fiddlers Grover, and numerous
historical events. We dressed and demonstrated
1850's style family life and soap making.

We began home schooling our sons when we
started  traveling with the soap. Let me say it is
a privilege to live in a country where we have
this freedom, and we have  loved every minute
of it.   For the past couple of years,we have
been cutting back on our shows. We would like
to do more work from home, since our boys are
getting older and their schooling becomes more
demanding.

Please come see us if you get the chance.
Seeing soap made in a old fashion way is very
interesting and educational.

Only God knows what the future holds for the
Stevens family. So as we grow and learn,  we
appreciate your continued support through the
use of our soap.

So from all of us in the Stevens home,
Thank you & God bless you!
